Luna Moth

Photo provided by Jerry Klein.

We looked out our kitchen window one morning in early May and noticed what looked like a leaf clinging to the side of our garage. Upon closer inspection, the "leaf" turned out to be the lovely Luna Moth.

Despite references to the contrary (including Microsoft's Encarta and the National Audobon Society's Field Guide to North American Insects and Spiders), this beautiful silk moth is not currently listed on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species List. Nevertheless, it is rarely sighted, no doubt at least partly because the adult luna moth has a life span of only about one week.
